As the demand for sustainable and reliable energy grows, innovation in nuclear technology becomes increasingly important. As a nuclear energy specialist, we are confident your work can make a difference to the Dutch energy transition.
About MOOI: Nuclear Energy
This funding opportunity is part of the Dutch government's broader Missiegedreven Onderzoek, Ontwikkeling en Innovatie (MOOI) program. It supports collaborative research and development projects that contribute to the creation of safe and sustainable nuclear energy solutions. More specifically, MOOI: Kernenergie supports collaborative R&D projects in nuclear technologies and safe waste storage. It's open to companies, research institutions, and public organisations. To qualify for this subsidy, your project must be collaborative and have at least €2 million in eligible costs. Each project can receive up to €4 million in funding, with a minimum of €25,000 per participant.

What are the focus sectors of the MOOI program?
Within the overarching MOOI program, the nuclear energy branch focuses in two areas:
Nuclear reactor and fuel cycle technology
Generation IV reactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), including smart reactor design, safety under extreme conditions, efficient fuel cycles, and reuse of radioactive waste. Projects can also cover data needed for licensing, use of residual heat, automation of reactor systems, and improved safety or cybersecurity.
Storage of radioactive waste and geological disposal
Projects focused on innovative waste storage solutions, underground structures, waste packaging, retrievability, and minimising environmental impact. Eligible topics range from geological risk analysis to efficient use of underground space, as well as reducing long-term storage costs.
If your work involves one of these sectors, you may qualify for funding.
How much funding is available?
Each project can receive up to €4 million in funding, with a minimum of €25,000 per participant. MOOI: Nuclear Energy has a total budget of €10 million. The funding rate depends on the type of partner involved: SMEs are eligible for 50% of their project costs, large enterprises for 40%, and knowledge institutions can receive up to 80% of eligible expenses.
